Auguste Rodin’s belief in the expressive power of every aspect of human anatomy led to some of his most radical experiments, like this sculpture of two right hands. Rodin begins the marble version the year of their separation (Rodin having refused to choose between Camille and his wife): 1893.
The story goes that the carving assistant - Victor Peter - in charge of sculpting the marble following Rodin’s model, suspended work at this state because he wanted to make sure that Rodin really wanted a collarette under Camille’s headdress. Faced with the sculpture thus advanced, Rodin had then decided not to push the sculpture further and to leave it as it was
